They of the Western Horizon
I
The people of the western seaboard, the Vaekalakai are a group of 13 Tribes, or Hapū, that occupy territories all along the Drowned Sea, forming the Ka’ani Vaeka, or just Vaeka, a united chiefdom of independent nations. Bonded to the powerful Mosasauridae, the Vaekalakai are a people who have remained fearsome and prosperous despite the drought. They fish off the beach and conquer new lands when their nets come up empty. As a highly animistic society, magic among the Vaekalakai is not only revered, but expected. They believe that magic is a communal obligation, not a gift, and thus those who fail to channel through their harpoons are called Nā’kai-rū, or oathbreakers, and are often exiled for failing to protect the reef and the people.
